Two people have been hurt, one seriously, in an early morning apartment fire in Waterloo.

Fire crews were called out at about 5am today (Friday) to an apartment building in the 1700 block of Jefferson Street.

Occupants in the first floor apartment awoke to noises, and called the Waterloo Fire Department.

Those people were able to get out ok, but they were not able to get to the resident above them; one person sustained some cuts trying to get to his neighbor.

Firefighters were able to get to the trapped resident in his bedroom; he did receive some serious burns. The fire was located in the living room of the apartment.

Crews then extinguished the blaze; the cause, which did not appear to be suspicous, is under investigation.

The two injured men were taken to a local hospital for treatment; there was no word on their condition.
