Four Area Schools Win Volleyball State Championships, Results & Photos

Four Cedar Valley high school volleyball programs earned the coveted state championship crown Friday (Nov. 10, 2017) at the US Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids. Recaps and photos here.

After a season long battle, four northeast Iowa high school volleyball programs sat on top of the Iowa High School Volleyball world hoist a state championship trophy. Not only did all four win the title, they each did so in straight sets. It was a perfect day (12-0) for our excellent area volleyball programs.

Photos and recaps can be found below, but first we would like to say congratulations to the Cedar Falls Tigers (5A), Waterloo Columbus Sailors (3A), the Dike-New Hartford Wolverines (2A), and the Janesville Wildcats (1A). You earned your spot at the 2017 Iowa High School Volleyball State Tournament, but you proved you deserved it when you hoisted the trophies at the end of the week.

CLASS 5A: #1 Cedar Falls vs. #2 WDM Valley

10:00 AM: PREVIEW
#1 seed Cedar Falls (42-2) hasn’t lost a set since arriving in Cedar Rapids, and are looking to win their first state volleyball title in school history. The Tigers made it to last year’s championship game, but was swept out, and they are looking for redemption. Looking to stop their match is #2 West Des Moines Valley (41-7). The Class 5A kicks off Championship Friday at 10:00 AM.

RECAP:
1st SET: The Cedar Falls Tigers started their championship quest tight, and WDM Valley capitalized and jumped out to a 3-0 lead. The Tigers settled into the game and climbed back into the game. Cedar Falls rallied for a six-point run and found themselves leading 12-7. Sideouts were swapped until Valley decided to call a time out with Cedar Falls up 14-10. Valley would keep even putting together a few two-point runs. They were able to creep back within in two, 20-18, forcing the Tigers to call timeout. Cedar Falls won the race to 25 winning 25-21.

2nd SET: Again the Tigers started the set tight. Miscommunication early allowed Valley to jump out to another 3-0 lead, but the Tigers would get back on track and eventual took over the match eventually leading 11-8. Cedar Falls’ attack kept Valley playing more defense than offense. The Tigers attack was overpowering thanks to the big boom of Claire Gerdes, Taylor Lunch, and  Akacia Brown. Cedar Falls powered away from WDM Valley winning the second set 25-19.

3rd SET: There was no issues to start the third. Cedar Falls didn’t waste anytime starting the third set scoring the set’s first three points. The Tigers dominated the third frame leading by as much as 6 point. Now it was Valley’s turn to play tight. Cedar Falls never let Valley get to close to challenging for the lead and rode off to the win and a state championship. [See Photo Gallery]

CLASS 3A: Columbus Catholic vs. Sioux Center

2:30 PM: PREVIEW
#3 Waterloo Columbus Catholic (35-8) had to stage a thrilling come-from-behind semifinal win to make today’s title match. Down 2-0, the Sailors battled back to beat the #2 Kuemper Catholic Knights who had only lost seven sets all season. Columbus delivered three straight set wins earn the right to to play #1 Sioux Center (34-5). Sioux Center also found themselves down 2-0 in their semifinal match but rallied for the win. The Class 3A title battle begins at 2:30 PM at the US Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.

1st SET: The start of the first set say Waterloo Columbus Sailors and Sioux Center Warriors.  trading sideouts. Then Sioux Center broke out on a six-point run forcing Columbus to call a timeout trailing 11-5. The Warriors add two more points after the break before the Sailors could break the run. Columbus started losing site of the lead falling eight points back, but a few ‘dig deep’ moments to extent a few rallies sparked the team, and the fought their way back into the match to trail by only one, 17-16. Columbus finally retook the lead, 20-19. Columbus pulled out to a 23-20 before closing out set one winning 25-21.

2nd SET:
The second set was aback-and-forth dog fight. Neither team could mount much of run, until the mid-point of the set. Waterloo Columbus strung together a five-point run to lead 17-11. The Soilors look to have rattled the Warriors, and they broke out to a 20-15 lead. The Sailors cruises to the second set win, 25-20, giving them a 2-0 lead in the title match.

3rd SET:
The third set was all Sailors. Columbus jumped out to the early lead. They allowed the Warriors to hang around through the first have of set three. That’s when they started to pull away and with the third set and the Class 3A state championship, 25-21.

CLASS 2A: Dike-New Hartford vs. Western Christian

4:45 PM: PREVIEW
This looks to be the best two programs in all classes ready to lock horns for a Class 2A volleyball state championship. #1 Dike-New Hartford (49-3) has been the team to beat all season long, and they look to close out the year as a state champion proving they deserve the accolades. The Wolverines have dominated both offense and defense when around the net. Standing in their way of a state title is the team that has won 16 of the last 17 titles. #2 Western Christian (39-6) knows what it takes to win. These two powerhouses face off starting at 4:45 PM at the US Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.

RECAP:

1st SET:
Dike-New Hartford trade points with Western Christian as the first set began. Slowly DNH worked a couple two and three point runs into the back-and-forth pattern. Eventually it was Dike-New Hartford that started pulling away and won the first set 25-15.

2nd SET:
The Dike-New Hartford Wolverines came out running to start the second set leading by 5 at one point, but the Western Christian Wolfpack chipped away at the lead. They came within 2, 16-14. DNH would then call a timeout to regroup, and the took back command of the set marching out to a 21-15 lead. The Wolfpack wasn’t done. They went on their our march to pull within three, 23-20, but DNH would finish the set winning 25-21.

3rd SET:
Despite being down 2-0, the Wolfpack had plenty fight still and them, and the opened third letting the Wolverines they were not done yet claiming an 8-3. DNH called a timeout to slow the momentum, but Western Christian still had the command of the third set to this point. DNH was able to grab a couple of points while exchanging sideouts, and the eventually tied the set at 12-12. DIke-New Hartford would score seven of the next eight points. Despite another run by Western Christian, Dike-New Hartford would win and capture the 2017 Class 2A championship

7:00 PM: PREVIEW
The #1 seed Janesville Wildcats (35-7) return to the Class 1A championship match for the third straight year. The Wildcats are looking to win the state title for the fourth time in five years, and they have looked strong in both matches they have played at the US Cellular Center sweeping both East Mills and Holy Trinity. The will take on #3 Gehlen Catholic (29-6) for the championship.

1st SET:
The Gehlen Catholic Jays took command as the first set got underway stringing 6 straight points. The Janesville Wildcats kept their composure during the run, and found a way to steel the momentum from the Jays. The Wildcats make a run of their own, and capitulated to 17-11 lead. Just past the middle part of the set, Janesville turned on the afterburners and closed it out with 25-14 win.

2nd SET:
Janesville hit the fast lane to start the second set. A furious attack on the Jays helped the Wildcats cruise out to a 10-4 lead before Gehlen Catholic finally broke Janesville service. That didn’t stop the Wildcats as they mashed the gas and leaped to a 15-5 lead. The Jays mounted their own rally to pull within six. The two teams traded sideouts for a few vollieys until Janesville hit the 20 mark (20-13). The Jays only slowed the Wildcats trek to 25 as Janesville won 25-16.

3rd SET:
The start of the third set went back-and-forth with no team really pulling away from the other. Janesville was the first to string five in-a-row to claim a 12-8 lead. The Jays tried to stop the Wildcats’ roll with a timeout. Gehlen charged back to even the score at 13. Now it was Janesville’s turn for a timeout. The break worked, as the Wildcats picked up pace and finished of the Jays 25-19 for the set win and Class 1 A Championship.

In other championship action, #2 Dubuque Walhert (22-9) defeated #4 Sergeant Bluff-Lufton (42-4) 3-2 for the Class 4A state championship.
