A Waterloo man has been identified as the victim in a fatal accident on U.S. Highway 63 in Black Hawk County on Monday (April 4, 2016).

According to sheriff's officials, Phat Tai Tran, 68, was killed when the minivan he was driving collided with a semi tractor-trailer near the intersection of Iowa Highway 175, south of Hudson. Tran was transported to a Waterloo hospital, but was declared dead upon arrival.

While the accident remains under investigation, sheriff's officials have confirmed a preliminary probe has revealed that Tran's northbound vehicle crossed the center line into the path of a southbound semi, striking the rig head-on. Authorities identified the semi driver as Thomas Bronson, 57, of Coral, Mich.

Authorities said they received witness reports of a grayish-colored minivan traveling northbound on Highway 63 weaving in and out of traffic at excessive speeds. A short time later, deputies were advised of the accident.
