On Friday (April 20), news broke that Avicii had died at 28, only two years after announcing his retirement from performing due to health problems.

According to a statement provided to Variety, the Swedish hitmaker (real name Tim Bergling) was found dead in Muscat, Oman on Friday afternoon. A cause of death has not yet been revealed, but the musician had suffered from health issues for several years, including acute pancreatitis resulting from, in part, excessive drinking. He had his gallbladder and appendix removed in 2014.

One of the foremost names in EDM, Avicii first catapulted to fame in 2011, after his Grammy-nominated single, "Levels," launched the then-20-year-old DJ to overnight stardom. Within a year, he'd landed on Forbes' Highest Paid DJs of 2012 list, and by 2014, he was No. 3 — thanks largey to an extensive touring schedule that earned him $28 million that year.

Over the course of his career, Avicii released two full-length albums — 2013's True and 2015's Stories — and lent his sonic fingerprints to a number of hit songs and collaborations. Below, look back at his eight biggest.

  • 1

    "Levels"

This 2011 insta-banger launched Avicii into the international spotlight, peaking at 60 on the Hot 100 and going No.1 on the dance charts. It was near-inescapable for months.

  • 2

    "Wake Me Up"

Having climbed to No. 4 on the Hot 100, "Wake Me Up" remains Avicii's highest charting single to date. It also helped shape much of the dance music still dominating the Top 40 today, paving the way for country-EDM crossovers like Bebe Rexha's "Meant to Be" and Hailee Steinfeld's "Let Me Go."

  • 3

    "Hey Brother"

This twangy club-kindler notched a No. 16 spot on the Hot 100.

  • 4

    "The Days"

"The Days" is one of Avicii's more subdued efforts, melding swaying, acoustic-driven production with a singsong chorus.

  • 5

    "You Make Me"

This 2013 entry is a classic example of mainstream EDM done right: danceable, buoyant, and endlessly catchy.

  • 6

Coldplay's "A Sky Full of Stars"

Avicii produced this soaring 2014 crowd-pleaser for Coldplay's sixth studio album, Ghost Stories.

  • 7

    "Devil Pray" by Madonna

He also put his sonic stamp on Madonna's "Devil Pray," a stomping folk-pop mash-up for 2015's Rebel Heart.

  • 8

    Coldplay's "Hymn for the Weekend"

His second Coldplay team-up came with an added dose of star power, recruiting Beyoncé for this big-tent ballad in 2016.
