The Black Hawk County sheriff's department is mourning the loss of a deputy, who was killed in an off-duty traffic accident on Tuesday (Aug. 4, 2015).

The two-vehicle crash near Crossroads Center in Waterloo claimed the life of deputy sheriff Tim Petersen, 34. The accident happened around 5 p.m. on Crossroads Boulevard at the entrance to Best Buy and BioLife.

Waterloo police said a sport utility vehicle (SUV), driven by Shawn Flippo, rolled through a stop sign and struck the motorcycle Petersen was riding. He later died at a local hospital.

Flippo, 30, of Waterloo, told police she did not see the motorcycle. Officers ticketed her for failing to obey a stop sign and driving with a suspended license.

Petersen was a nine-year veteran with the Black Hawk County sheriff's department, hired in August 2006. Chief deputy Rick Abben said Petersen was assigned to the patrol division.

Abben described Petersen as "a hard working individual, who greatly enjoyed his career."

Funeral arrangements are being made but haven't yet been finalized, Abben said.

Petersen is survived by his wife and five-year-old son.
