One goal in each period – two on the power play – were enough for the Waterloo Black Hawks to outdistance the Sioux City Musketeers, 3-2, at Young Arena Friday during Game One of the Clark Cup Semifinal series between the Highway 20 rivals.

Sioux City scored the opening goal of the game at 4:52. Trevor Olson’s shot bounced high into the air, coming down in the crease where it was batted into the net by Avery Peterson. After no initial indication by the officials, video review confirmed the goal. Two minutes earlier, Waterloo goalie Cal Petersen turned away Avery Peterson’s first quality chance of the game, moving from left-to-right to snare a shot with a superlative glove save.

The Hawks answered at 15:23; with Zach Sanford left alone behind the net, he found Drew Melanson coming up the ice after a change. Melanson squeaked a shot between Kyle Hayton and the post at the goaltender’s right to even the score.

In the second, Waterloo recorded the only goal during a late power play. Brandon Montour fired the puck off of Hayton and the post to his right, creating a second chance for Tyler Sheehy to stuff between the pipes at 15:41. Petersen turned in another terrific stop just over two minutes later, snuffing out a chance by Sam Saliba on a two-on-one rush up ice.

Waterloo converted another power play opportunity 9:55 into the third period. Patrick Russell’s backhanded goal was set up by the rebound of another Montour blast. Forty seconds later, the Musketeers got back to within one goal when Olson slipped a low shot past Petersen. However, Waterloo turned away a Sioux City power play with under five minutes remaining in regulation, then stopped the Musketeers during more than a minute while the visitors had an extra attacker to close the game. Petersen made 31 saves for his 4th win this postseason.
