Traffic is flowing again on U.S. Highway 218 in the southern part of Waterloo after being unexpectedly closed for nearly 15 hours.

The Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) was forced to shutdown about a one-mile stretch of the highway when a utility poll snapped in half near the Isle Casino Hotel Waterloo around 4 p.m. Wednesday (May 10, 2017). Officials closed U.S. 218 between the U.S. Highway 20/Iowa Highway 27 interchange and Shaulis Road (County Road C-37) while utility crews worked to repair the damage.

U.S. 218 was reopened around 7 a.m. Thursday.

The IDOT reported the closure was caused by maintenance work.
