The heavy rains have prompted the National Weather Service to issue a series of flood notices along the Cedar River. From Janesville to Cedar Rapids are forecast to see some form of flooding into the weekend.

In Janesville, the area effected begins at the Quarter Section Run to the West Fork Cedar River. At 2:45 AM Thursday (September 22, 2016) the stage was 4.8 feet or 8.2 feet below flood stage. Flood stage is 13.0 feet. No flooding was occurring at the time of the report, and moderate flooding is forecast. Waters will begin to rise to 17.8 feet. (4.8 feet above flood stage) by Saturday evening. Then it begin fall and go below Flood Stage Sunday evening.

While confidence is high that the river will reach flood stage, the height of the crest remains somewhat uncertain and will depend on how much rain falls in the next six hours.

In the Cedar Falls area, the warning includes the From the west Fork Cedar River and runs to the Cedar Falls-Waterloo city limits and is in effect until further notice. At 2:45 AM Thursday, the stage was 86.8 feet which is 1.2 feet below flood stage (88.0 feet). No flooding was reported at that time, but the river is expected to rise to 96.8 feet (8.8 feet above flood stage) on Sunday morning.

While confidence is high that the river will reach flood stage, the height of the crest remains somewhat uncertain and will depend on how much rain falls in the next six hours. The most effected area is the 1500 to 1700 blocks of Center Street between the Brown Bottle and Cottage Row Road.

In the Waterloo area, the warning runs from the Waterloo-Cedar Falls city limits to Spring Creek near La Porte City. At 3:00 AM Thursday, the stage was 9.5 feet which is or 3.5 feet below flood stage (13.0 feet). Moderate flooding is forecast. The levels are expected to rise to flood stage Friday morning and will continue rising to 20.9 feet (7.9 feet above flood stage) on Sunday morning. It is projected that is will go below flood stage Wednesday morning.

While confidence is high that the river will reach flood stage, the height of the crest remains somewhat uncertain and will depend on how much rain falls in the next six hours.

In Vinton, a flood watch has been issued. The stage was at 11.1 feet, and flood stage is 15.0 feet. Major flooding is possible. Very heavy rain is falling upstream of Waterloo. This water will likely bring at least minor flooding to the Cedar River at Vinton.
The forecast calls for the Cedar to rise above flood stage Saturday, and continue rising to
19.6 feet Monday morning. Currently it is forecast to fall below flood stage Wednesday. This is based on forecast rainfall, consequently there is limited confidence in the river reaching flood stage. Forecasts may change so monitor for updated information.
