Deja Vu: Another Bucks-Honkers Game Suspended

For the second time this season, the Waterloo Bucks and Rochester Honkers had a scheduled Northwoods League game suspended Tuesday night (July 5, 2016).

An excessive amount of lightning and rain in southeast Minnesota forced umpires to stop the action at Rochester's Mayo Field, where the host Honkers were leading the Bucks 6-2 at the start of the fifth inning when play was halted. The game will be completed on July 13 when Waterloo next visits Rochester.

Earlier this season, a Bucks-Rochester game in Waterloo was suspended by league curfew when rain twice forced a delay and pushed the June 14 contest into the early morning hours of June 15. That game, suspended at 12:53 a.m., was completed Monday night (July 4) at Riverfront Stadium.

On Tuesday, Rochester jumped on the Bucks early by scoring a run in the first inning.

Waterloo (22-13) rallied with pair of runs in second. Alex Boxwell singled to center before Zach Weatherford belted a two-run blast over the left-center wall. The home run was the second in the last three games for Weatherford.

Rochester (7-28) regained the lead with a two-run third inning, then extended the margin to 6-2 on Drew Ellis' three-run home run in the fourth.

Patrick Boyle went three innings for the Bucks, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks while hitting one batter and striking out four.

Since Tuesday marked the final night of play in the first half-season, the suspended game will be added to both teams' second-half record when the game is completed next week. The teams will complete the nine-inning game on July 13, before playing their regularly-scheduled game, which will now be a seven-inning affair.
