Demi Lovato performed her summer smash, "Cool For the Summer," at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night (May 22), reminding all that while powerful ballads like "Stone Cold" may be her artistic forte, she's still a pop star through and through.

Strutting, black thigh-high boots and all, the former Disney darling sassed the stage up during the performance, flipping her hair and punctuating her moves with the pyrotechnics exploding behind her. But it was perhaps her top—a black mesh t-shirt with a hybrid man/woman logo emblazoned across it—that made the biggest statement: a subtle sartorial protest against the ongoing gendered bathroom battle here in the States, something she and Nick Jonas stood up against in April with their joint boycott against North Carolina's bathroom bill.
