A controversial bill which would halt millions of dollars in federal funding for Planned Parenthood has passed through the State Senate. The bill now heads to the Iowa House of Representatives.

The bill passed by a margin of 30-20 Thursday afternoon.

Democratic Senator Janet Petersen pleaded against the proposal. "This bill is dangerous. It endangers the health of thousands of Iowa women, Petersen told the Des Moines Register. "It decreases access. Twenty-eight men and one Republican woman will tell women where they can and can’t obtain care."

Republicans who hold a majority will likely approve the bill, sending it to the GOP-led House. The bill proposes Iowa give up nearly $3 million in Medicaid money to create a state-run family planning program that excludes funding for organizations that perform abortions. No family planning money now funds abortions. [CBS 2]

Planned Parenthood of the Heartland currently has 12 clinics across Iowa, providing services to more than 25,000 patients.
