Do Iowans Talk Faster Than Other Americans?

I will tell you that in the year or so that I have lived here I have never noticed people talking any faster than usual.

In which U.S. states do people talk the fastest and the slowest? To find out, the analytics firm Marchex studied more than four million customer-service phone calls for rate and frequency of speech -- you know, those calls you make are all recorded.

They determined that these five states are home to the speediest chatterboxes:

1. Oregon
2. Minnesota
3. Massachusetts
4. Kansas
5. Iowa

And these five states have the slowest talkers:

1. North Carolina
2. Alabama
3. South Carolina
4. Louisiana
5. Mississippi

Wait, there's more! They also analyzed not just the speed of the words used but the number of words used.

These are the states with people that talk the most:

1. New York
2. California
3. New Jersey
4. Nevada
5. Maryland

And these are the states where people speak the least:

1. Oklahoma
2. Kansas
3. Wisconsin
4. Minnesota
5. Iowa

Iowans don't say a lot, but when they do say something they say it quickly!
