A two-phase construction project on Dubuque Road in Evansdale is about halfway complete and a traffic pattern switch is scheduled to begin today (Friday, Aug. 14, 2015).

Crews repairing the eastbound bridge that spans Elk Run Creek on the northeast side of the city are ending their work, while construction on the westbound structure is about to begin at a time when the entire $450,000 project was supposed to be finished. Construction delays pushed back the completion schedule, Evansdale Mayor Doug Faas said.

The construction project began June 15 with a completion time-line of two months. Since then, eastbound traffic on the four-lane divided thoroughfare – formerly U.S. Highway 20 – has had to detour through Evansdale and Elk Run Heights using Lafayette Road.

With the eastbound lanes reopening, westbound traffic will be detoured off Dubuque Road onto Lafayette, starting today.

Mayor Faas said a contract crew hired by the city of Evansdale is making the infrastructure improvements on both bridges. The project involves repairing the support system, installing new railings, and replacing some decking on each structure.

Despite construction delays on the eastbound structure, Faas said work on the westbound bridge should take about 30 days to finish.
