Emma Watson Will Make You Want To Delete Your Facebook in New Clips From ‘The Circle’

You know when you’re casually scrolling through Facebook reading statuses and an ad pops up for that random blender you were researching on Amazon? Or when that person you went on a really awkward Tinder date with shows up in Instagram’s recommendations to follow list? If you think the internet is terrifying now, just be glad we don’t live in a world with The Circle… yet.

James Ponsoldt’s new thriller, based on the Dave Eggars novel, follows a tech and social media corporation that pushes the limits of privacy to chart new territory. In The CircleTom Hanks is the CEO and Emma Watson’s Mae is the newest recruit. Two new clips from the film have arrived to make sure we’re as scared of the future as possible. The first finds Watson’s employee suggesting a new online system from her social media company that compiles all the law-mandated civil duties and responsibilities into one platform. Imagine, you can log onto Facebook to post a selfie, pay your taxes, set up bill pay, and vote, all in one place. NOT FREAKY AT ALL.

The second clip is an extended look at footage teased in the film’s trailer where Mae is interviewed for her job at The Circle. Nate Corrdy asks her a round of rapid-fire questions like, Paul versus John, Mario versus Sonic, and whether or not she’s owned velcro pants (oddly enough, she has). Here’s the film’s full synopsis:

The Circle is a gripping modern thriller, starring Emma Watson (“Harry Potter”), Tom Hanks (“Sully”) and John Boyega (“Star Wars: The Force Awakens”). When Mae (Emma Watson) is hired to work for the world’s largest and most powerful tech & social media company, she sees it as an opportunity of a lifetime.  As she rises through the ranks, she is encouraged by the company’s founder, Eamon Bailey (Tom Hanks), to engage in a groundbreaking experiment that pushes the boundaries of privacy, ethics and ultimately her personal freedom. Her participation in the experiment, and every decision she makes begin to affect the lives and future of her friends, family and that of humanity.

The film also stars John Boyega, Patton Oswalt, Karen Gillan, Ellar Coltrane, and the late Bill Paxton. Before The Circle hits theaters on April 28 it makes its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival next week (stay tuned for our review), just enough time to delete all traces of yourself on the internet and escape to the woods Walden style.
