Tama County authorities have captured a work release inmate who failed to return to a central Iowa correctional facility earlier this week.

Iowa Department of Corrections officials said sheriff's deputies took Michael Field, 49, into custody near Tama Saturday morning (Dec. 22, 2018). He apparently walked away from a private sector work site in Iowa County Wednesday night.

According to correction officials, Field left the Newton Correctional Release Center for a work assignment at Quantum Plastics in Victor. His supervisors at the company saw Field taking a break near his assigned workplace shortly after 11:30 PM, but he didn't return to the state facility. Officials placed Field on escape status once they discovered that he had absconded.

Records show that Field was convicted of the following crimes: eluding, operating someone else's vehicle without the owner's consent, and operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He was placed in the Newton Correctional Release Center on Oct. 10.
