Fire Damages Downtown Waterloo Apartment

A woman escaped uninjured from her burning apartment in downtown Waterloo Monday morning (Oct. 17, 2016).

Firefighters were called to a four-plex at 311 Lafayette St. around 4:30 a.m. They were at the scene for nearly three hours.

According to Waterloo Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Mike Moore, flames were shooting from a downstairs air-conditioner window when fire crews arrived. A women told firefighters that popping sounds woke her up and that she fled the building after her attempts to put the fire out failed.

Moore said there was heavy smoke damage throughout the apartment and the blaze was contained to the downstairs unit. The woman was displaced by the fire, but no other residents of the four-plex were effected.

Investigators are trying to determine the cause.
