Flood Warnings Posted For Northeast Iowa Rivers

Flood warnings are posted for some area rivers following heavy rainfall in Northeast Iowa Tuesday night (June 14, 2016).

Minor flooding is expected this week along the Cedar River in Black Hawk County, where the National Weather Service has issued a flood warning at Cedar Falls until Saturday evening. Officially, the warning is posted for the river between the West Fork Cedar River to the Cedar Falls-Waterloo city limits.

At 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, the river stage at Cedar Falls was 85.0 feet, or 3.0 feet below the 88-foot flood stage. No flooding is occurring now, but forecasters predict minor flooding.

The Cedar River at Cedar Falls is expected to reach flood stage Thursday evening, while continuing to rise. The river is forecast to crest at 89.7 feet -- or 1.7 feet about above flood stage -- on Friday afternoon. The Cedar should then begin falling and go below flood stage again Saturday evening.

At 89.7 feet, water covers a portion of Cottage Row Road in the northern part of Cedar Falls known as North Cedar.

North of Waterloo-Cedar Falls, a flood warning is also posted for small streams in north-central Butler County through 4:14 a.m. Thursday (June 16). At 8:49 a.m. Wednesday, emergency management officials reported the river was starting to crest near Greene where some minor flooding was occurring. Little additional flooding is anticipated and the river should begin falling by midday, forecasters said.

Upstream in Floyd County, law enforcement officials reported that some secondary roads remain closed and a few have been washed out by overnight rainfall. A flood warning for the Shell Rock River at Rockford and Marble Rock was scheduled to expire at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Elsewhere in eastern Iowa, a flood warning continues for the Turkey River in Clayton County until Thursday afternoon. Minor flooding is occurring in the cities of Garber, Osterdock and Millville.

At 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, the river was 1.3 feet above its 17-foot flood stage. The National Weather Service said the Turkey River will rise to about 18.5 feet before falling before flood stage this evening.
