A lake sturgeon, which is on Iowa's endangered species list, was caught in the Upper Iowa River earlier this month.

Rob Griffith reeled in the rare fish on May 5th near Decorah in Winneshiek County. According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, lake sturgeon are listed as endangered species because of "habitat degradation and dams limiting access to suitable spawning areas."

Lake sturgeon have an average life expectancy of 50-55 years for males and 80-150 years for females. The history of the fish dates back to the era of the dinosaurs, nearly 135 million years!
