A Wisconsin man, kayaking with his family in Northeast Iowa over the weekend, had to be rescued from a river and flown to an area hospital.
Shortly after 4pm Saturday (Sept. 3), the Fayette County Sheriff received a 911 call, about a man who had flipped his kayak on the Turkey River, north of Gilbertson Park, near Elgin.

A kayak operated by 27 year old Alvin Colson of Platteville, became lodged against a tree; it then flipped over, causing Colson to strike his head on some rocks. Colson was reportedly unconscious.

Deputies and emergency responders had to hike through the recently flooded woods and trails for over a half-mile to reach Colson, who was stranded on an island in the Turkey River.

Due to the severity of his injuries, Aircare from Waterloo was called in to take Colson to an area hospital. There is no word on his condition.

The Fayette County Sheriff was assisted by the Elgin Fire Department and Tri-State Ambulance.
