As the city's longest-serving mayor, Jon Crews definitely left his mark on Cedar Falls.

Crews is being remembered for his life-long devotion and dedication to the city following his death Thursday morning (April 6, 2017). He died at the age of 70, after a battle with liver cancer. He was diagnosed in January.

Crews spent more than 30 years as mayor, leading the city during three different tenures covering parts of five decades. He was one of the nation's youngest mayors when first elected in 1971 at the age of 24. Crews initially led the city from 1971-1979, then was mayor again from 1987-1993. His third stint as Cedar Falls' top-elected official was the longest, from 1999-2015.

When Crews wasn't leading Cedar Falls as mayor, he was serving the city in other ways. His public service resume also included one four-year term as a city council representative and a one-year stint as Black Hawk County treasurer.

Crews left public office at the end of 2015, choosing to retire at the conclusion of his latest term instead of campaigning for a run-off election against current Mayor Jim Brown.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday (April 10) at Orchard Hill Church in Cedar Falls. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, also in Cedar Falls.
