Authorities are reminding citizens to be wary of items found discarded on roadsides and ditches, as they may contain dangerous chemicals associated with manufacturing illegal drugs.

At about 4:30pm Wednesday (Feb. 22), Charles City Police were called out to investigate a report of suspicious items found in a backpack, near the Charley Western Trail, behind Charles Street in Charles City.

The items were found to be meth lab-related.

The Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement took possession of the items used for making meth, for proper disposal.

Police caution you to never open jars, bottles, or touch suspicious items that are found lying around.

If in doubt, contact local law enforcement.
