Attempted murder and other charges have been filed against an Independence man, who is currently a patient at the Mental Health Institute.


44-year-old Terrance Rooney Jr. is accused of attempting to suffocate another patient with a pillow last November, and assaulting an MHI staff member in February.

Rooney has had a long list of offenses, including previous run-ins with staff and threats to U.S. Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush & George H.W. Bush, as well as Governor Terry Branstad and Senators Chuck Grassley and Tom Harkin.

Authorities have transferred Rooney to the Buchanan County jail on charges of Attempted Murder, Assault on Persons Engaged in Certain Occupations, and First Degree Harassment.

He is being held on $500,000 bond.
