NE Iowa School Bond Goes Down to Defeat
Voters in the Central Community School District in Elkader have rejected a $6.75 million bond issue that would have paid for renovations and construction at the district's buildings.
In a special election held yesterday (Tuesday), the General Obligation bond was turned down by a vote total of 645 no, to 462 yes votes. It needed a super-majority, or 60% voter approval for passage, but only received about 42%.
Breaking the vote totals down in each Clayton County community in the Central district:
in Elkader, it failed 296 yes to 399 no;
in Volga, it got 38 yes to 84 no votes;
in St. Olaf, it was 35 to 53 against;
Elkport: 15 yes to 25 no;
and Absentee voters also rejected it 78 yes to 84 no.
The money would have paid for new special ed classrooms, music room, weight room and multi-purpose wrestling room, locker rooms and new media center.
