One of the main draws of this year’s Logan was the new mutant X-23, otherwise known as Laura, a usually quiet, sullen child who turns into a whirlwind of tooth and claw when the mood strikes. Logan’s Laura was played by the fantastic newcomer Dafne Keen, but there was a time during auditions when the role might have gone to a more recognizable face: Stranger ThingsMillie Bobby Brown.

Brown revealed in a video interview from Variety that she’d auditioned for X-23 in front of Hugh Jackman and director James Mangold, and that she was really enthusiastic about the part.

I went for Logan, I went for the little girl. It meant so much for me. I was filming Stranger Things and I was like, This is going to be amazing, I’m gonna really prepare. I sat in my room reading the lines. Honestly, for me, I felt so — I felt an actor, in the audition room, hitting Hugh Jackman, and James Mangold sitting right in front of me.

She didn’t get the part, but was very complimentary of Keen all the same.

I watched it, she was incredible.

This would certainly have provided quite the fodder for an only-in-your-dreams shared universe — God, can you imagine the fan theories? — but even so, I’m glad the part went to a fresh new actress. Dafne Keen was phenomenal in the role and will hopefully get plenty more work because of it. Brown already has a runaway hit TV series on her hands, so there’s no need to worry about when we’ll see her on our screens next.
