Zayn Malik's "Pillowtalk" could be a sign of what's to come from the better part of One Direction, group mentor Simon Cowell has said.

In an interview with E! News flagged by The MetroCowell said he has no uncertainty about the fate of 1D's four remaining members in the industry — they will produce independent music. But, he noted, that doesn't mean the group — currently on hiatus — is done for good.

"Yeah, there will be more [solo material], I’m absolutely sure of that," he said.

Cowell also noted that the group's current break was well-deserved, and the guys' futures will be clearer soon.

"You can’t work at that level; the way they did," he said. "I mean lots of things are going to be announced over the next few months, but they were, are, the nicest people, you know, to work with. Hardworking, appreciate everything, so it won’t be the end."

Malik released his debut solo single in January, which immediately shot to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. His debut album, Mind of Mine, is set for a March 25 release — which happens to be one year to the day when he officially quit One Direction.

What do you think — are we in the final days of 1D, and could you see the remaining four members going their separate ways soon? Give your take in the comments.
