One Killed, Two Injured In Foggy Benton County Crash

Authorities believe dense fog played a role in a deadly crash on Iowa Highway 150 in Benton County on Tuesday (Sept. 19, 2017).

According to the Iowa State Patrol, one person was killed and two others were injured when a garbage truck collided with a semi tractor trailer at a rural intersection about four miles north of Vinton, just before 7:30 a.m.

Officials identified the victim as Dennis Umbdenstock, 65, of Urbana. Troopers said he was driving the garbage truck.

Two passengers in the garbage truck were injured. Wesley Venenga, 17, of Vinton, was transportated to a Cedar Rapids hospital for treatment, and Jonathan Poorman, 22, also of Vinton, was taken to the local hospital. The extent of their injuries was not released.

The Iowa State Patrol said the accident happened when the garbage truck, traveling southeast on 24th Avenue Drive, pulled into the path of the semi after stopping at the Iowa 150 intersection. On the crash report, investigators noted that heavy fog covered the area at the time of the mishap.

Troopers identified the semi driver as Christopher Stanbrough, 31, of West Union. He escaped injury.

Iowa 150 was closed for nearly seven hours after the accident, which remains under investigation.
