Winter has us in its painful grip. We've been trapped in the Polar Vortex for what seems like an eternity, and it's going to get worse before it gets better.

Snow is expected to become more widespread later Sunday night, especially north of Highway 20. A winter storm warning has been issued for Sunday evening through Monday evening. Waterloo and points north could see between 3" to 8" of new snowfall. Strong winds could cause blowing/drifting snow and poor visibility, especially on rural roads.

Another strong blast of arctic air is expected to move through the area on Tuesday. Record-breaking cold could set in, with sub-zero high temperatures and wind chills as low as -50°! The all-time record low for Waterloo is -34°, reached in January 2009.

CBS 2 Chief Meteorologist Terry Swails predicts that some of us could experience more than 100 consecutive hours WITHOUT above-zero temperatures. That's more than four full days. Yikes. Thankfully, we should start to see some relief by the end of the week, with temps getting back into the 30s next weekend. Stay warm!
