A high-speed chase through portions of Black Hawk County and the city of Waterloo ended with a man in custody after shots were fired by a sheriff’s deputy early Wednesday (Nov. 22, 2017).

According to Waterloo police, the pursuit began around 4:45 a.m. when an officer attempted to stop a pickup truck going 67 m.p.h. in a 45-m.p.h zone on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. The vehicle failed to stop and the driver led authorities on a chase toward the unincorporated community of Dewar, then back into Waterloo.

Police said the pursuit eventually ended up on Cedar Bend Street near Lincoln Elementary School. That’s where authorities put down stop sticks in attempt to end the chase, but the vehicle drove across a grassy area off the road and kept going. According to police, a Black Hawk County sheriff’s deputy fired his service weapon in the direction of the fleeing pickup as the vehicle drove away.

Officials said the pursuit continued for approximately 10 more minutes until the pickup finally stopped in the 100 block of Allen Street in Waterloo, where the driver was arrested. Eric Norelius, 35, of Waterloo, was transported to the Black Hawk County Jail on a variety of charges, authorities said.

Waterloo police and Black Hawk County sheriff’s officials are investigating the incident.
