This Saturday, May 13th the National Association of Letter Carriers, union members, staff of local Food Banks and pantries and the Cedar Valley United Way will take part in the Cedar Valley’s largest one day “Stamp out Hunger” food drive.

Since 1992 Letter Carriers noted that as they delivered the mail that there are a lot families and individuals dealing with hunger issues. They came together and made a plan to ask people to set out nonperishable food by their mail boxes on the second Saturday in May and they would collect the food and deliver it to where it could do the most good. The food is sorted weighed and shared with the Northeast Iowa Food Bank, The Salvation Army and St. Vincent DePaul locally in the Cedar Valley

Who: Everyone can help as donors, or if you would like to help collect the food you can contact the Northeast Iowa food Bank or John Padget at the Cedar Valley United way 235-6211 ext. 12. Other groups include local union members and their families, staff of the local agencies, West High School student Athletes.

What: collecting, sorting, weighing and delivering donated food to local agencies that fight hunger in our community.

When: Saturday May 13th starting at 8:00AM we ask people to set out their donations first thing in the morning as some routes will be collected by volunteers. The top requested non-perishable food items are: cereal, pasta, pasta sauce or spaghetti sauce, rice, canned fruits and vegetables, canned meals (such as soups, chili and pasta), 100% juice, peanut butter, macaroni & cheese, canned protein (tuna, chicken and turkey), beans (canned or dry).

Where: We will be in various places durring the day starting at the Post Office Annex jusy off of Hyway 63 South of Ridgeway, then after picking donations we will have drop of locations at West High Parking lot off Baltamore Ave. as well as intersection of Ansbrough Ave, and Black Hawk Road and the Black Hawk Labor Temple. At 1:00-1:30 PM trucks will be sent to the Northeast Iowa Food bank to complete sorting and weighing the donations.
