A stubborn storm developed across north-central Iowa bringing heavy rain and severe weather that produced at least three tornadoes Wednesday evening (Sept. 21, 2016).

Radar estimates of 5-10 inches were common across southwest Floyd and northern Butler counties. The deluge of rain flooded the southern two-thirds of Floyd County, the National Weather Service reported.

The excessive rainfall left many roads in the area impassable, including Iowa Highway 14 in Floyd County. According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, the highway is closed in both directions between County Roads B60 and B45 about one-mile east of Marble Rock.

Flash flooding warnings were posted for several area counties overnight and remain in effect for Chickasaw, Fayette and northeastern Floyd county until 8:15 a.m. Thursday.

Runoff from the heavy rainfall will occur in the Shell Rock and Cedar River basins, causing both rivers to rise farther downstream over the next few days. The National Weather Service has posted flood warnings for the Shell Rock River from Clarksville to the Cedar River in Black Hawk County until late Monday evening (Sept. 26).

Two tornadoes touched down in Floyd County and another one reached the ground near Greene in Butler County. Some buildings were destroyed and tree damage was reported, along with multiple power outages. There were no immediate reports of injures.
