Five Northeast Iowa students are now being charged with sexually assaulting another student.

The investigation began on January 15th, when the Winneshiek County Sheriff was notified of 2 separate assault incidents: one at South Winneshiek High School in Calmar, and the other in a rural area near Fort Atkinson. The victim in both cases was a South Winneshiek student.

One of the students, Braxton Smith, was charged in adult court with aggravate assault with intent to commit sexual assault, and four additional juveniles were referred to juvenile court.

Due to a conflict of interest, the case was transferred to the Howard County Attorney, and then the Allamakee County Attorney.
