UNI wrestling stayed undefeated in the MAC and kept Buffalo scoreless to win on Saturday, January 10, 2015, 37-0.

The University of Northern Iowa Panthers improves to 6-3 overall and 3-0 in the MAC. UNI has won 12 straight home duals dating back to the start of last season. Buffalo falls to 4-6 overall, 0-3 in the MAC.

“When you go a second day in a row, you have to get tougher, and I thought we were better today” said head coach Doug Schwab “A couple of guys had to dig deep in some situations, but I thought it was a much better overall effort. I can see some momentum.”

Six Panthers earned bonus points for the Panthers: Dylan Peters with a major decision at 125, Leighton Gaul with a fall at 133 pounds, Jarrett Jensen’s major decision at 157 pounds, a major decision for Basil Minto at 197 pounds and Blaize Cabell with a major decision at heavyweight.

“We talked about finishing matches, and that was a lot of points,” said Schwab of the bonus point wins. “We put the hammer down. Instead of trying to skate through things and hold on, we’re building. When you compete like that, people take notice.”

No. 6 Peters (125 pounds) ran out of time in the first period after taking Buffalo’s Max Soria to his back. He got the three near fall points but wasn’t able to get the fall in the first. He continued to stay on the offensive, earning more than two minutes of riding time. He blanked Soria, 12-0. Soria is ranked fourth in the MAC, while Peters is second.

At 133 pounds, Gaul grabbed his second dual win of his career with a fall in five minutes and 50 seconds.

Headed into the third period, Jake Hodges had already secured his riding time, having amassed more than three minutes. He went to work on a major decision but had to settle with a 9-2 decision against Rosco Russo.

Gunnar Wolfensperger trailed much of the match at 149 pounds to come back and erase Justin Cooksey’s riding time and earn multiple sets of near fall points to win the match 10-8. He was just shy of earning riding time.

Jensen grabbed the first points of the match near the end of the first and grabbed another takedown in the middle of the second. He led the third 4-0 with 50 seconds of riding time. After an escape, Jensen grabbed another takedown and enough riding time to earn the major decision, but he secured it with near fall points at the end of the 157-pound match to win 10-0.

Taylor Berger scored first in his dual debut for the Panthers at 165 pounds. He got an escape in the second to lead 1-0 starting the first. Rrok Ndojak came back with an escape early in the third to tie it up and send the match into overtime. With just 15 seconds left, Berger grabbed the takedown needed to win 3-1.

It was tied 2-2 at the start of the third period for the 174-pound match, but Curt Maas jumped ahead to beat Muhamid McBryde, 5-2. Maas is ranked fourth in the MAC.

Cody Caldwell (184 pounds) had the match tied up at 2-2 before an exchange of takedowns gave Brett Perry the lead. Caldwell regained the lead to win 10-7.

Minto struck early at 197 pounds and led the entire match. He got 1:46 in riding time and earned his first major decision of the season with a 15-6 win over James Benjamin.

Cabell kept UNI perfect at heavyweight. He had more than three minutes in riding time and earned his fourth major decision, 19-8.

Cabell notched eight takedowns today and nine against Northern Illinois Friday night.

“That’s a lot of takedowns. I don’t believe there is a more offensive heavyweight,” said Schwab. “I challenged him a little bit to be the mark for our team. We just have to keep him building on it.”
