The Panthers grabbed one dual win at Grapple at the Garden Sunday, beating Drexel, 24-14 on December 21, 2014.

UNI competed in three duals against Duke, Drexel and No. 3 Cornell all at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Blaize Cabell was the only undefeated wrestler on the day, getting two major decisions and a decision win at heavyweight. Cabell improves to 14-4 overall and 6-0 in duals. UNI grabbed five bonus point wins.

The Panthers are now 3-3 in duals. UNI returns home to host Eastern Michigan at 2 p.m. Jan. 4 on Hall of Fame Day. The Panthers will be honoring the 1974-75 team that won the Division II NCAA team title for UNI under the helm of coach Chuck Patten.

 

DUKE VS. UNI (21-16 DUKE)

The Panthers earned bonus point wins from Dylan Peters and Cabell, but it wasn’t enough to overtake Duke.

Peters, 125 pounds, grabbed his seventh fall of the year to get the Panthers started. He led 10-1 before pinning Thayer Atkins in 5 minutes, 39 seconds.

Duke’s Tanner Hough moved up a weight to face Gunnar Wolfensperger at 149 pounds. Wolfensperger earned 3:10 in riding time. His 6-2 decision put UNI back in the lead, 9-6.

Curt Maas compiled 2:25 in riding time and won 5-3 over Duke’s Trey Adamson at 174 pounds, but a forfeit at 165 pounds had the Panthers trailing 15-12.

The Blue Devils’ wins at 184 pounds and 197 pounds put the win out of reach despite a major decision win by Cabell. He went up 10-4 and had 1:05 in riding time after the first period. He went on to take the match 20-8 with 2:17 in riding time.

DREXEL VS. UNI (24-14 UNI)

The Panthers earned riding time in the first five matches they won and got bonus points from Peters, Jensen and Caldwell. Cabell also earned 1:16 in riding time in his decision win at heavyweight.

Peters compiled 1:23 in riding time in the first period and continued to build throughout the match, earning a total of 3:35 and missed a tech fall by just two points.

Wolfensperger’s 1:54 riding time was the deciding factor at 149 pounds. The 174-pound match was also decided by riding time. Maas earned 1:22 to stay perfect in dual competition (5-0, after two competitions Sunday).

Caldwell had secured his riding time point with 4:39 heading into the final period. He compiled 5:28 total to get the 10-1 major decision.

Minto got his first dual win of the season in two tiebreakers. He scrambled out to get the escape in the first tiebreaker session and was able to keep Drexel’s Joshua Murphy down to keep his one-point lead, winning 4-3.
