Investigators believe natural gas caused a weekend explosion at a Cedar Falls apartment complex that later resulted in a man's death.

Cedar Falls police Lieutenant Martin Becker confirmed that Matthew Ferleman, 43, died Saturday night (Oct. 10, 2015). Ferleman suffered critical burns across a significant part of his upper body when the blast occurred.

Emergency crews were called to the former Shady Rest Motel at 2008 Center Street just before 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. The blast blew out the front and back walls of apartment No. 4 and also damaged adjacent rooms.

The explosion left at least nine other apartments unliveable, but no other injures were reported. The American Red Cross is assisting people displaced by the blast.

Officials say the explosion is likely related to a gas leak. The state fire marshall is investigating the cause.
