Voters in Waterloo and Cedar Falls chose new mayors during run-off elections on Tuesday (Dec. 1, 2015).

In Waterloo, councilman Quentin Hart made history with his victory over former three-term mayor Tim Hurley. Unofficial results show Hart won nearly 60-percent of the votes and will become the city's first African-American mayor when he takes the oath of office next month.

Election totals show Hart beat Hurley 5,222 to 3,614, a 58.7-percent margin. He won in 20 of 30 voting precincts and also garnered the most absentee votes, 764 to 292.

Hart will replace out-going Mayor Buck Clark, who did not to seek a fourth term.

Hart's seat on the city council will be filled by Jerome Amos, Jr., who was elected to represent Ward Four with 60-percent of the votes. Amos received 899 votes in Tuesday's run-off election to beat challenger Chris Schwartz, who got the support of 592 voters.

In Cedar Falls, school board member Jim Brown was elected the city's new mayor by a wide margin. He received about 75 percent with 3,541 votes, while incumbent Jon Crews received 143 votes. David Halterman picked up 988 votes as a write-in candidate.

Crews dropped out of the race two days after finishing second to Brown in the municipal election. Halterman launched a write-in campaign after finishing third on Nov. 4.

Waterloo and Cedar Falls held run-off elections Tuesday because no candidates received 50 per cent of the vote in the city elections last month.
