Voters in the Waterloo Community School District will head to the polls for a special multi-million dollar bond election early next year.

On Feb. 2, 2016, voters who live in the Waterloo Schools boundary will be asked to consider issuing $47 million in general obligation bonds to build a Career Technical Education (CTE) Center on district-owned property adjacent to Central Middle School. The center would offer 30 new career choices for students, a curriculum change recommended by the district’s school reform committee -- and backed unanimously by the Board of Education -- in October.

The estimated cost to build the proposed center is $35 million. The remaining $12 million -- divided equally -- would be used for planned renovations at East and West High Schools.

The referendum requires 60-percent voter approval.

All seven Waterloo school board members voted unanimously this week to schedule the special bond measure on Feb. 2 after accepting a petition of support signed by more than 500 voters who participated in the last school election.
