A woman is now facing charges following the death of a toddler at a Waterloo daycare seven months ago.

Police have charged Amy Hangartner, 41, with child endangerment resulting in death. She was arrested and taken to the Black Hawk County jail on Wednesday (Jan. 13, 2016).

The charge is connected to the death of 18-month-old Brody Harrelson.

On June 17, 2015, Waterloo police and fire rescue personnel were dispatched to 1415 Bertch Ave. on the report of an unresponsive child at an in-home daycare. Harrelson was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

According to court records, the boy was buckled into a car seat inside a second-floor closet for a nap. The child was found unconscious when someone checked on him two hours later.

A state medical examiner later ruled that Harrelson's death was accidental. Dr. Michele Catellier stated in her autopsy report that the toddler died of mechanical or positional asphyxia from a car seat strap. The death certificate says a contributing condition may have been myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart wall possibly caused by a viral infection.

Waterloo police said they determined that Hangartner was the daycare provider responsible for Harrelson at the time of his death. If convicted of the child endangerment charge, she could spend up to 50 years in prison.
