The high school football season reaches the half-way mark with week five games being played across the state this week. For three teams in the Cedar Valley, Friday will be a historic night.

Cedar Falls plays at Waterloo West and Waterloo East travels to Marion to face Linn-Mar in what will be the first-ever district games for the Tigers, Wahawks and Trojans. With conference football now a thing of the past for Class-4A teams in Iowa, the battle to secure a post-season playoff berth begins with these Friday night match-ups.

This week's schedule also includes two potentially good games with Aplington-Parkersburg at Iowa Falls-Alden and Dike-New Hartford at Hudson. All four teams are 3-1.

In eight-player football, second-ranked Don Bosco puts its 18-game winning streak on the line against what appears to be a dangerous opponent. The Dons travel to North English to play an English Valleys team that is 3-1 overall.

Of the four winless teams around the area, one is guaranteed a victory this week. Waterloo Columbus Catholic travels to Oelwein for a Class-2A District 3 game that features a pair of 0-4 teams. It’s Homecoming for the Huskies.
