Week three of the high school football season marks the start of district play for most squads across the state. Two top ten teams meet in the Class-3A, District 3 opener Friday night (September 12, 2014) when 5th-ranked Waverly-Shell Rock hosts 4th-rated West Delaware.

Waverly-Shell Rock Coach Mark Hubbard believes it'll be an exciting game for the fans.

"It should be fun," he said. "You know, I think both schools are really looking to find out what they have. You get a chance to that against a quality opponent."

Both teams qualified for the playoffs in 2013 and advanced to the second-round. Both have been impressive in their two non-district games this season.

Waverly-Shell Rock (2-0) opened the season with victories against two Class-4A opponents. The Go-Hawks won their home-opener, 49-14, over Mason City last week. They won at Waterloo West, 31-13, on August 29th.

West Delaware has also had a pair of convincing victories. The Hawks opened their season with a 40-14 win against Western Dubuque in Manchester. Last week, they posted a 35-0 shutout at Maquoketa.

West Delaware and Waverly-Shell Rock aren't the only area teams entering week three games unbeaten. There are eight other games being played Friday night that feature an undefeated squad. Those match-ups include: BCLUW (2-0) hosting Gladbrook-Reinbeck (1-1); AGWSR (2-0) at Grundy Center (0-2); Clarksville (2-0) entertaining Northwood-Kensett (2-0), Don Bosco (2-0) hosting Grandview Chistian of Des Moines (2-0), Janesville (2-0) at Riceville (0-2), New Hampton (2-0) hosting Waterloo Columbus Catholic (0-2), North Fayette Valley (2-0) at Center Point-Urbana (2-0), South Winneshiek (2-0) hosting MFL-Mar-Mac (2-0), and Sumner-Fredericksburg (2-0) entertaining Hudson (1-1).

Four games on this week's schedule are non-district match-ups. They include Denver (1-1) hosting Dike-New Hartford (1-1), Cedar Falls (1-1) playing at Mason City (0-2), Waterloo West (0-2) traveling to Fort Dodge (1-1) and Waterloo East (0-2) welcoming Dubuque Hempstead (1-1) to Memorial Stadium for Homecoming.
