Ariana Grande, who has been named Billboard’s 2018 Woman of the Year, has been through a lot lately, both in her personal life and in her career. In a new cover story interview with the publication published on Wednesday (Dec. 5), the singer reflects on her reflex to cope through music and hints at making a new song about her late ex-boyfriend, Mac Miller.

During the interview with journalist Natalie Weiner, Grande played an exclusive preview of what she is working on, with the writer noting that one song in question was possibly commenting on her relationship with the Pittsburgh rapper, who passed away back in September from a drug overdose.

“Just before this interview, she was working on a new song, which, when she plays it for me later, I realize is about Miller,” Weiner writes.

While there are no additional details shares as of yet, it wouldn’t be the first time Grande has turned to music to process her relationship with the 2011 XXL Freshman and the impact he had on her. Last week, she shared the record-breaking visual for her track, “Thank U, Next,” where she pays homage to her past romantic partners, including ex-fiancé Pete Davidson.

Elsewhere in the interview, Grande talks about her dream to “put out music in the way that a rapper does.”

"I feel like there are certain standards that pop women are held to that men aren’t,” she elaborates. “We have to do the teaser before the single, then do the single, and wait to do the preorder, and radio has to impact before the video, and we have to do the discount on this day, and all this shit. It’s just like, ‘Bruh, I just want to fucking talk to my fans and sing and write music and drop it the way these boys do. Why do they get to make records like that and I don’t?’"

The singer has previously hinted at dropping her new project while on tour for her Sweetener album, which is set to kick off in the new year on March 19, 2019.

The album is currently in its “polishing phase,” with Weiner describing it as “more adventurous than anything she has ever released.”
