The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences set a new benchmark in questionable choices today, when they announced the addition of a new Oscar for “Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film,” aka “Most Popular Movie But Not Necessarily Worth a Best Picture Nod.” Almost immediately following the announcement, some cinephiles and critics pointed out that the move was obviously designed to allow beloved blockbusters and superhero flicks — like this year’s Black Panther — to receive recognition from an awards show that typically overlooks them.
‘Supergirl’ Movie Reportedly in the Works as Warner Bros. Hires Screenwriter
A little bit of a good news / eyebrow-raising news situation here, as Warner Bros. and DC Films are reportedly plotting a Supergirl movie (yay!) from the writer of The Cloverfield Paradox (hmm…). It’s still early days, however, and given the number of writers typically involved in your average blockbuster, it seems likely that this iteration of the script will be one of many.

The cast of Roseanne will return to televisions this fall — without Roseanne Barr — in The Conners. The spinoff, which features the remaining members of the iconic sitcom family, will officially premiere on Tuesday, October 16 — almost a month after ABC debuts its other fall programming. In addition to The Conners, the network has set fall premiere dates for several other new and returning shows, including The Good Doctor and Grey’s Anatomy.
