A popular park near Cedar Falls that was damaged by spring flooding has reopened.

In a press release posted to Facebook, Black Hawk County Conservation officials said Black Hawk Park opened Thursday afternoon (May 16, 2019). However, a portion of the park remains closed to the public.

Officials said campers are being restricted to the Fogdall area of the campground, while the Cedar side remains closed.

Bathrooms in the campground are open, but park users will have to take showers at the old shower house near the park's entrance.

Black Hawk Park sustained significant damage when the Cedar River flooded in late March and early April. Conservation officials said high water, coupled with large ice floats, created more damage than a normal flood would.

Pictures posted to the agency's Facebook page showed multiple trees were toppled by the rapid current. The water and ice slabs damaged roads and other infrastructure inside the park, leaving a major clean-up.

Conservation officials opened Black Hawk Park for day use only on April 25, but minor flooding forced them to close the park again on May 10.

Park managers did not give a timeline for when they expected the full campground to be open again.
