Residents have agreed to partially finance the construction of a new high school in Cedar Falls.

On Tuesday, voters overwhelmingly cast their ballots in favor of Public Measure A, which authorized the bond debt. The measure received 67% support, with 6,439 saying "Yes" and 3,159 voting "No".

Public Measure B authorized a property tax increase to pay off the debt over 20 years. It received 65% support, with 6,261 casting "Yes" ballots and 3,304 voting "No".

To pass, both measures required 60% voter approval. The results are unofficial, however, until the ballots are canvassed by the Black Hawk County Board of Supervisors.

The bond referendum will generate nearly $70 million. Overall cost of the project is estimated at $112.8 million.

The new high school is expected to open in the fall of 2023. The structure will be built on 50-acres of land along West 27th Street, west of the UNI-Dome. It will replace the current high school on Division Street, which has been in use since 1954.

Also on Tuesday, Cedar Falls voters elected Alan Heisterkamp to fill an open at-large seat on the Board of Education. Heisterkamp -- running unopposed -- was chosen to replace Eric Giddens, who resigned in April following his election to the Iowa Senate.
