The Cedar Rapids Police Department has announced an arrest in a double murder that happened on the city's southwest side Saturday, May 18.

According to Cedar Rapid Police, 26-year-old Andre Richardson, pictured below, was located at 10:59 this morning by officers and the United States Marshals Task Force. He was reportedly in a residence in the 300 block of 22nd Avenue Southwest. Richardson then fled on foot and was found in a garage at 299 21st Avenue Southwest. He was taken into custody at 11:15 am.

During this morning's incident, two area schools (Wilson Middle School and Grant School) were put on lockdown.

Last Friday, May 31, Cedar Rapids Police announced an arrest warrant had been issued for Richardson. He is a suspect in the double murders of 18-year-old Matrell Michael Eugene Johnson and Royal Ceiz Abram. Two others, a 19-year-old male and 19-year-old female, remain hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

According to a release from the Cedar Rapids Police Department, Richardson faces nine charges:

  • Two counts of First Degree Murder
  • Two counts of Attempted Murder
  • Two counts of Willful Injury Causing Serious Injury
  • Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon
  • Felon in Possession of a Firearm
  • Going Armed with Intent
