Investigators are trying to determine the cause of an early morning house fire in Waterloo on Wednesday (April 4, 2018).

Crews were called out to extinguish the blaze shortly after 4:30 AM, when neighbors spotted heavy smoke coming from a two-story home at 308 Locust St. According to Waterloo Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Ben Petersen, the upper portion of the house was fully involved when firefighters arrived. They were at the scene for about two-and-a-half hours.

Petersen said the fire caused heavy damage to the home's second floor and attic, and there was water damage throughout the entire structure. He estimated the damage to be about $25,000.

According to Petersen, the initial report of the fire indicated that the home was occupied at the time of the fire. The report, however, turned out to be incorrect.

Petersen said the adult male who lived in the home wasn't there when the blaze broke out. No injuries were reported.
