57-year-old Michael Oehme of Council Bluffs was shot and killed Friday. His wife, 55-year-old Kari Oehme, was shot in the neck and shoulder but is expected to survive the injuries. The pair were waiting to board a flight to the Caribbean.

Mark Lea of Elk River, Minn., told the Des Moines Register he had just arrived on a Delta flight from Minneapolis, Minn., and estimated he was 100 yards away from the shooting:

I tried to stay out of his [the shooter's] line of sight and keep other people protected and just seeing how to get people out of there ... He walked around the baggage claim area ... and point and shoot; point and shoot. Anyone who was in his path of walking was shot where they were.

It was then when Lea encountered Mrs. Oehme:

She asked if he was still alive. I saw a pool of blood, and he was shot in the head. I tried to console her and tell her he was fine. He was 2 feet away. He wasn’t breathing or moving or anything like that ... She was very concerned about her husband.

Authorities identified the gunman as 26-year-old Esteban Santiago. According to the Broward County Sheriff's Office, in addition to those killed and wounded, about three dozen people were taken to local hospitals for a variety of injuries.
