I am of the opinion that Arnold Schwarzenegger is currently making the most interesting movies of his career. Not necessarily the best or more satisfying on a visceral level; the most thoughtful, the most rich with themes and ideas, the most clearly made to comment upon and play with his image as the biggest action hero of the ’80s and ’90s. Still, while I really enjoy movies like Sabotage, Maggie, and Aftermath, they are much darker and more introspective films than Arnold used to make; in the last couple years, he hasn’t had much of a chance to flex his comedic muscles in the way he used to quite regularly in the years after Twins became a surprise blockbuster.

That will change with Why We’re Killing Gunther, in which Schwarzenegger will partner with former Saturday Night Live star Taran Killam, who wrote and directed the film in addition to appearing onscreen with Arnold. With the Cannes Film Festival in full swing, we just got our first look at the film (see above). And here’s the plot synopsis via IMDb:

A group of eccentric assassins are fed up with Gunther, the world's greatest hit-man and decide to kill him but their plan turns into a series of bungled encounters as Gunther seems to always be one step ahead.

It’s a perfect premise for comic Arnold, and I can’t wait to see Schwarzenegger square off with Killam, and to see what Killam has cooked up for his feature debut. Gunther may not be as smart as the other, darker recent Arnold movies. But it could be absolutely hilarious.
