When you think of Valentine's Day sweets, you think of chocolates...right? Well, it may not be as obvious as you'd think.

According to CandyStore.com, Americans will spend $1.7 BILLION on Valentine's Day candy this year. More than 40 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolates will be sold, but the candy "conversation" hearts have overtaken them in popularity, accounting for 10.2% of all Valentine's candy sold in 2017.

Despite the conversation hearts' recent surge in popularity, most states still (wisely) prefer chocolate above all other options. This is true for Iowa, too, but a different type of chocolate wins our hearts.

As you can see in the graphic above, M&Ms candies were #1 in Iowa. I'd have to agree with this choice--as Forrest Gump's mama always said, "you never know what you're gonna get" when it comes to a box of chocolates. M&Ms are simple, sweet, and easier to share with your special someone (if you actually want to share, that is).

Happy Valentine's Day...or Singles Awareness Day...whichever you prefer. I'll just be over here eating chocolate.
