September Flooding In The Cedar Valley

If it seems like there has been a lot of rain in the Cedar Valley the past few weeks, there has. And, the amount that has fallen is unprecedented.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), Waterloo has set an all-time record for monthly rainfall, receiving 12.89" since Sept. 1, 2018. With four days left before the calendar turns to October, the rainfall total is the most for ANY month on record in Waterloo since the agency started keeping records in 1895.

Waterloo officially set the record on Tuesday (Sept. 25), when 1.14" fell on the city. The old, all-time monthly rainfall record of 12.82" was set in July 1999.

It marks only the fourth time in history that Waterloo has received at least a foot of rain in a given month.

The weather system that moved across eastern Iowa on Tuesday produced a weak tornado in Cedar County. According to meteorologists, the twister damaged two grain bins when it touched down briefly in a rural area southeast of Mechanicsville just before 2 PM.

A survey team rated the tornado an EF-0 with winds around 80 MPH. A report shows the tornado was 20 yards wide and was on the ground for several hundred feet.

No injuries were reported.
