There are a pair of special election issues being decided in Black Hawk County today (Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2018).

In Waterloo, voters are filling the Ward 5 city council seat left vacant when Chris Shimp resigned on Aug. 10. Two candidates on the ballot, educator Ray Feuss and maintenance contractor Jason Welch. The winner will serve the remaining three years of Shimp's four-year term.

Polls are open from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Voting is limited to Waterloo voters who reside in the six precincts that make up Ward 5.

Meanwhile, voters in the Dunkerton School District are being asked to renew a physical plant and equipment levy (PPEL) for another 10 years. If the outcome is favorable, residents would continue to pay a property tax rate of $1.34 per $1,000 of assessed valuation. Money generated by the PPEL would pay for specific maintenance and technology needs for the next decade.

A simple majority is needed for the measure to pass.

Polls in Dunkerton are open from noon to 8 PM at the public library, 203 E. Tower St.
